5 Indoor Games You and Your Pet Can Play

Author: Mark Elliot

I don't know about you but, when I was a kid, sunshine meant it was time to play outside. The woods behind my parents' house would practically glow, full of natural treasures waiting to be discovered. There were bugs, plants, and endless ways to come back covered from head to toe in dirt. Nothing held me back like a rainy day...except maybe a rainy week.

As an adult, I still love to play outside and so does my dog, Puglsey. We both value our time outside but it seems as though inclement weather is always around the corner, ready to spoil our fun. Of course, the great indoors can be enjoyable too. Here are five activities to help you and your dog get through those pesky rainy days:

  1. Tug-of-War – A classic. Whether you use a bone or a piece of rope, this is a sure-fire way to burn some energy and bond with your dog.

  2. Guess-the-Hand – Let your dog sniff a treat then shuffle the treat between your hands. With both palms closed, have your dog guess which hand the treat is in. If they smell the correct hand first, turn over the treat and reward them!

  3. Doggie Date – Have a friend bring over their dog and let the two socialize. Even the best human/pet interaction is no substitute for the companionship of another dog.

  4. Movies for Dogs – While dogs don't see movies quite like we do, there are movies tailored specifically for dogs. This is a great way to wind down after playtime.

  5. Obedience Training – If you're stuck inside all day, why not do some obedience training to pass the time? By the end of a long winter, you may have the best-behaved dog on the block!

What Happened to the Million Cash & the Suspect?

Author: michael Webster

by Michael Webster Investigative Reporter

June 2, 2008 6:00 p.m. PST

U.S. Currency confiscated in traffic stop by El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Back in January of this year the El Paso Journal reported that an El Paso County sheriff's deputy pulled over a Freightliner Tractor Trailer on Friday Aug 18, 2008 at I-10 mile marker 45 in the eastern part of EL Paso county. While conducting a search of the trailer he discovered about $1 million in cash.

The sheriff's dept claims a deputy pulled the tractor-trailer over at about 2:48 p.m. After noticing the vehicle was "weaving in and out of traffic," sheriff's spokesman Rick Glancey said. The deputy requested backup after noticing that the driver of the tractor-trailer was acting suspicious. Another deputy with a police dog responded to the scene, and allegedly the dog alerted the deputies to cash inside the rig.

The report then states that while examining the tractor-trailer's cargo, deputies discovered several bundles of cash. Detectives from the El Paso County Sheriff’s office - Special Operations Division were summoned to the scene. Based on size and weight Detectives estimate a-million dollars in cash was confiscated.

An investigation into the discovery of the undeclared cash continues at this time it is believed. A source close to the investigation reports detectives are believed to be investigating where the large amount of cash came from. They are looking into the possibility that the money could be related to illegal drugs and/or terrorist activity.

To date no new information or even basic details have been released by the El Paso County Sheriff's Department. The El Paso Journal has requested additional info on the matter and there has been no response from the Sheriff's office. They will not give the media the suspect’s name, age or if he has been charged and if so what the charge or charges are. This clandestine profile the Sheriff has adopted and the lack of cooperation is highly unusual.

The Sheriff's office did admit by saying," this is a major case and an ongoing investigation is still underway by the Special Operations Division.  The identity is still being withheld and it is unknown at this time if any charges will be filed against the driver.  It is possible the suspect has secretly been charged and the information withheld from the public which if true that would be in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

An area law enforcement officer has told the El Paso Journal that the investigation is being handled the way that it is because bulk cash smuggling from the United States to Mexico has increased dramatically. According to the feds this is most likely the result of enhanced U.S. anti-money laundering (AML) regulations and law enforcement actions, which have made it more difficult for drug traffickers to launder drug proceeds through many U.S. financial institutions. And many of the Mexican drug cartels are suspected of moving the illegal drug money in varies vehicles including tractor trailers.

It is believed that bulk cash smuggling is now the primary technique used by Mexican Click on or Google: Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTOs) also known as Mexican Drug Cartels (MDC's). We'll use DTO's for this report.

Typically, bulk cash is transported by Mexican DTOs to consolidation points throughout the United States and transported over U.S. Highways to the Southwest Border.

According to the U.S. Border Patrol the consolidation points are often major metropolitan areas, or border cities like El Paso, or larger drug markets such as Dallas,  Atlanta, Charlotte (NC), Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Miami, San Diego, and New York. For example, law enforcement officials in Chicago estimate that between $10 million and $24 million in bulk cash drug proceeds are moved from that city each month, destined for Southwest Border locations. Additionally, law enforcement agencies have made several large bulk currency seizures from passengers traveling from U.S. drug markets dominated by Mexican DTOs to Southwest Border areas on Mexican bus lines. A number of Mexican bus lines operate daily service between Mexico, Southwest Border states, and many of the known bulk cash consolidation points used by Mexican traffickers.

New U.S. Government regulations and law enforcement actions, seems to have made it increasingly difficult for drug traffickers to place illicit proceeds directly into U.S. banks and other financial institutions. Therefore these actions are believed to have resulted in most Mexican Asian and Colombian DTOs avoiding such money laundering methods. Instead, Mexican  Asian and Colombian DTOs transport illicit drug proceeds (cash) from U.S. drug markets to other U.S. locations for consolidation. The proceeds often are transported in bulk to an area near the U.S.-Mexico border and are either smuggled into Mexico at Southwest Border ports of entry (POEs), primarily in South Texas, or remitted electronically to Southwest Border locations, where the transferred cash is then smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Diversification is a vital component of drug money laundering operations in the United States. The majority of DTOs operating in the United States--including launderers working for Mexican, Asian and Colombian DTOs that are responsible for most wholesale-level drug trafficking--rely on multiple methods to move and launder illicit proceeds. Law enforcement investigations initiated since January 2006 indicate that most DTOs use two or more techniques to launder drug proceeds. Even in Southwest Border states, where bulk cash smuggling is the predominant method of moving drug proceeds, most organizations use a variety of drug money laundering techniques, including wire remittances through Money services businesses (MSBs)  which have become a critical component to the ability of DTOs to launder illicit drug proceeds. They also buy and sell businesses and use them as front companies, who export and import into the U.S. They also buy and sell real estate properties, Then structure deposits in traditional bank deposits. They try to structure their deposits in unusually small amounts as a money laundering technique.

Emerging technology is equipping DTOs with novel money laundering idea’s and techniques. The cash is deposited into Mexican banks and other financial institutions with just a portions of the money electronically wire-transferred to the United States and other Latin American countries for placement into their financial systems. Other countries, such as Panama, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, is used to facilitate the Black Market Peso Exchange (BMPE) The cash is repatriated to the United States by Mexican financial institutions for reintroduction into the U.S. financial system. Then some of the remaining cash is smuggled in bulk farther south to Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, or other Latin American countries. Some of the cash is also used by the Mexico DTO’s (Mexican drug cartels) for operational expenses.

Money Services Businesses (MSBs) have become a critical component to the ability of DTOs to launder illicit drug proceeds. Many DTOs use U.S.-based MSBs--particularly money transmittal and check-cashing businesses to launder drug proceeds, frequently in conjunction with bulk cash smuggling. The diversity of services offered at many MSBs accommodates launderers' needs. Mexican DTOs often wire illicit proceeds in structured amounts through MSBs to collection points in Southwest Border states, where the wires are cashed, and most of the money is then smuggled across the border. In some cases, DTOs wire money directly to Mexico. Law enforcement reporting reveals that Mexico is the primary destination for suspicious funds sent through MSBs; however, law enforcement officials also report that significant amounts of money are also sent through MSBs to Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Russia, and various locations in Central America and South America. Money orders purchased at MSBs and U.S. Post Offices are also commonly used by drug traffickers to launder money. A review of OCDETF case initiations indicates that approximately 20 percent of its newly initiated money laundering investigations contain a money order component. Law enforcement officials, especially those from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and DEA and the regulatory community, have noted the continuous movement of money orders to Mexico and other Latin American countries in money laundering schemes. Additionally, open-system prepaid cards, also a product provided by MSBs, are used by drug money launderers. These cards can effectively be used to remit money across borders because card value can be added or withdrawn at automated teller machines (ATMs) worldwide.

Many DTOs exploit traditional depository institutions, sometimes innovatively. Traffickers exploit the services provided by traditional depository institutions to launder significant amounts of illicit drug proceeds, despite provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act  Click on or Google: The Patriot Act And You! that tightened AML programs for such institutions. According to Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) reporting, Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) filings for Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)/Structuring/Money Laundering continue to be high (302,818 filings in 2006) and remain the leading violation type by far of all suspicious activity reported by depository institutions. In addition to structuring, DTOs, primarily Colombian and Mexican, move illicit drug proceeds by depositing money in U.S. bank accounts and then quickly withdrawing the money from ATMs located in other states or countries; they also move these funds by wire transfer. Additionally, DTOs use correspondent, "payable through," and nested accounts to covertly access the U.S. financial system and move money within the United States and throughout the world

Dogtopia Raises over $24,000 to Benefit Working K-9s Across U.S

Author: Nicole

Bethesda, MD – Over a thousand dogs across the country were bathed, towel-dried and spritzed last month all in the name of charity. Dogtopia, a chain of upscale dog day care and spa facilities, held its seventh Annual Charity Dog Wash to benefit working dogs, raising a significant amount of money for the four-legged friends that selflessly serve communities nationwide.

From California to Maryland, 23 Dogtopia locations in 10 states participated in dog washes to benefit law enforcement K-9 Units, therapy dogs and any other working dog. A total of 1,140 dogs were bathed, and more than $24,000 was raised across the board.

"With the state of the economy and funding cut across the county, it is more important than ever to give back to the working dogs in our communities," said Amy Nichols, CEO and Founder of Dogtopia. "I am so excited to see the community involvement and to watch this event grow every year. We are truly making a difference in the lives of these canines and the people who love them."

Proceeds from the Dogtopia K9 Support dog washes will defer costs for training of police dogs and equipment such as ballistic vests, GPS units, safety harnesses and the outfitting of cars. Other monetary donations are directed straight to specific organizations supporting working dogs.

This year, locations in San Marcos, CA; Temecula, CA; Pleasanton, CA; Highlands Ranch, CO; Houston, TX; Waco, TX; Austin, TX; Wilmington, DE; Omaha, NE; Munster, IN; Nashville, TN; Cary, NC; N. Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Bayonne, NJ; Tysons Corner, VA; Herndon, VA; Alexandria, VA; Dulles, VA; Manassas, VA; Woodbridge, VA; North Bethesda, MD and Clarksville, MD participated in the dog wash.

"The Dogtopia annual K9 Support dog wash is our biggest event of the year to raise funds for working dogs. I'm overjoyed to see so many of our locations working together to raise much needed awareness for the loyal canines that are dedicated to humans everyday," Nichols said. "Most family dogs lead pampered lives, and we want to show our appreciation for those working dogs that strive to protect and support their human counterparts."

As a whole, Dogtopia has raised over $80,000 in donations since the start of K9 Support in 2005. For more information on Dogtopia's Annual Charity Dog Wash, please visit www.dogdaycare.com

The Goldendoodle Will Become the First Presidential Family Dog?

Author: Dee Gerrish

Will the Goldendoodle be the choice pick for the Obama family, who'll soon be residing in the White House?  Well, its quite possible.  Featured on Entertainment Tomight as being "hypo-allergenic"..........if the Obama's fall for THAT gimic,  the Golden Retriever club will be seething in glistening red when they see the beautiful Goldendoodle dog become a First Family pet!

Since 1999, the Goldendoodle dog has been blasted by dog fanciers, purebred fanatics and others as being nothing more than a high priced, designer mutt.  As a Goldendoodle breeder since 1999,  I've always known them to be entirely more than what many fanatics considered them to be.   I always said that those who made hateful comments about the Goldendoodle dog,  never met one nor have they ever owned one.

I can't tell you how many people we've converted to become Goldendoodle fanatics!  Once someone owns a Goldendoodle, many could never consider anything else.  The Goldendoodle dog is a celebrity in its own right....and rightly so!

While yes, the Goldendoodle dog is a low shedding, low allergenic dog.....they definitely are NOT hypo-allergenic and I could not believe my ears that a representative for the American Kennel Club named off several purebred dog breeds as being so!  Take the Wheaten Terrier for instance.  Yes, its appearance does resemble the Goldendoodle dog quite a bit, but hypo-allergenic they are not and they don't always make a great pet for kids.  Wheaten Terriers can be stubborn and fiercely independent and may need someone who is experienced with the breed.

The Goldendoodle dog, when bred correctly.....not coming from multi generations and NOT coming from inbred parents or inbreeding period, can be extremely loving pets for kids of all ages.  Goldendoodles who are six months or older have gone through most of their "shedding phases" but by no means they are hypo-allergenic.  Dogs in general will track in pollen on their feet and on their coat after going outside.  On a heavy pollen day,  it will be quite normal for them to track the pollen inside.  Reports say that the Obamas' daughter has allergies.  Well,  I certainly hope if they select a Goldendoodle as their first family dog,  that they will NOT get it based on a breeder telling them the dog is "hypo-allergenic".   I certainly also recommend that they have their daughter tested first to see what her allergy "triggers" are.

If the Obamas do select a Goldendoodle as their first family pet,  the dog will make tons of friends and the White House staff will enjoy the loving nature of the Goldendoodle dog!  They are playful, generous in giving affection, very loving dogs.  Whether they select a Goldendoodle; a Wheaten Terrier; Miniature Schnauzer; LhasaPoo; Schnoodle or purebred Poodle,  I hope they do not base their decision on breeders' claim of the dog being "non shedding" or "hypoallergenic".  I was just astonished to hear the reporter on ET report that the Goldendoodle was a hypo-allergenic dog!  It is of no wonder that when some people get the Goldendoodle dog,  they find themselves having issues with shedding or allergies.  It is because of erroneous reports and claims made on television and the internet.   Whatever dog they get,  I hope they get the dog because it is a low shedding dog......not because a breeder or reporter made the claim it was "hypoallergenic" and don't think for one minute that they have NOT already been flooded with thousands of requests by breeders of all breeds, to gladly give the Obamas' their first Presidental dog!

Tim Hennis ... And Justice For All - Finally!

Author: Dave Simpson

The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slowly, however they ultimately come to their destination. Following 25 years, they have parked right on top of Timothy Baily Hennis and he's most likely finding it pretty tough to breathe right now.

On Might 9, 1985, a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy entered Kathryn Eastburn's house close to Fort Bragg, NC simply because neighbors heard a child crying inside but they couldn't get anybody to arrive towards the door. He discovered Eastburn and two of her three daughters, ages five and three, brutally murdered in their beds. She experienced been raped after which stabbed 35 occasions. Her toddler daughter was in her crib but unharmed. Her husband, Gary, was a captain in the army and was out of state on the training deployment.

Investigators quickly arrested army sergeant Tim Hennis for the crime. When he was tried, prosecutors presented this scenario: Hennis had visited the home a few days earlier because the Eastburns had been about to be transferred and couldn't take their dog. He answered their "free to your great home" advert within the classifieds and decided to come back towards the home later to rape Kathryn Eastburn. He was discovered guilty and imprisoned. Protection attorneys argued that gruesome transgression scene photos had been display on a screen proper more than the defendant's head. The appeals courtroom agreed that was prejudicial and despatched the situation again for a re-trial. Hennis was acquitted the second time around.

After this, Capt. Eastburn gave an interview to your nearby reporter and told him that he experienced made the decision to get on with his existence. A Catholic, Eastburn experienced forgiven Hennis and said that his remaining daughter was as well valuable to spend his existence wrapped up in anger more than his wife's murder.

Right after he was acquitted, Hennis returned to the military and served until 2004, when he retired. But prosecutors and the sheriff's department in Cumberland County were still interested in him. They pulled out the proof investigators experienced gathered on the scene and sent it off for DNA testing. It nailed Tim Hennis to the wall. Now all they had to do was get him into a courtroom of law and let the jury do the remainder.

They could not call him again right into a Cumberland County courtroom due to double jeopardy - you cannot be tried twice within the same jurisdiction for your same crime. But Hennis was within the army at the time of the murder and still topic towards the code of military justice. The military recalled him to face a court-marital in 2006. He was convicted last week and yesterday he was sentenced to demise by lethal injection. Justice has lastly been carried out.

The permutations this situation has gone via have been riveting, they even made a made for Television movie about it. I lived in Fayetteville at the time of the homicide and knew a few people connected with the prosecution and the press that covered the demo. They've shared some fascinating evaluation of the trials and revealed a couple of intriguing things that did not come out in courtroom:

* They said police speculated privately that Mrs. Eastburn likely stayed silent all through the attack, so as not to wake her kids and place their lives in danger, as well. At least it conserve the existence of her baby.

* Investigators also uncovered info that this was not the primary time Hennis experienced been concerned inside a rape. Two women had been introduced in from out of state to witness the finish of the first trial. Neither had instances in opposition to Hennis solid enough to be introduced to trial, but prosecutors thought that the sight of them within the courtroom may make Hennis just a little nervous. After the women showed up in the courtroomm defense attorneys decided to not put Hennis on the stand.

* In the primary demo, the case proceeded to go to the jury the Friday prior to 4th of July. The judge held the jury more than the saturday and sunday to deliberate. On July 4th, they came again with a responsible verdict. Right right after it had been read Hennis' spouse Angela was heard to say: "Good, that's over. Now we can go towards the seaside." Right after the sentence was study yesterday, it is reported that she cried softly. Maybe she experienced planned to invest Easter saturday and sunday on the coast but couldn't make it due to the demo.

* On the time of the first and 2nd trials, DNA proof experienced not be judged to be admissible in North Carolina courts and prosecutors made the decision to not introduce it and make Condition v. Hennis a test situation. There was too a lot around the line for that.

* During his first two trials, Hennis taken care of that the only time he was in the Eastburn house or had any contact using the family was the go to he created concerning the dog. Then authorities submitted the evidence and found that the sperm discovered in Mrs. Eastburn was his. The argument on the court-martial that the that Eastburn and Hennis experienced been getting an affair and the sperm was from an previously encounter just did not maintain water.

* Hennis' protection in the primary two trials was paid for by his dad, who was a bigwig at IBM at the time. There were reports his father cashed out his whole retirement so his son could have two from the best criminal demo attorneys in the condition, Billy Richardson and Gerald Beaver. When he was hauled before a court-martial he could have employed a private lawyer who specialised in military justice for his defense but he didn't possess the financial resources he'd experienced before along with a army attorney defended him. He managed a good job but just did not have the specialized coaching of Mark Waple, a Fayetteville attorney whose handled hundreds of courts-martial. Had Hennis experienced the funds, Waple would have defended him.

* Of his original lawyers, Richardson was the youthful of the two and also the one who spoke towards the press most often. He has usually taken care of that Hennis was innocent. Beaver was older and much more skilled. When requested after the 2nd trial concerning the guilt or innocence of the defendant, he mentioned that it had been his job to make the condition prove their situation and that prosecutors had failed.

In 1989, Hennis managed to walk aside through the homicide charges in opposition to him. He probably felt pretty cocky to have gotten aside with murder. He's been a great boy since then with not so much as a parking ticket. However, in the early 90's when DNA proof was dominated admissible in a court of law, Hennis needed to have began living with the fear that his case could be re-opened. Even when he didn't realize that he might be called to a court-martial, there must have been some uneasiness for him. That discomfort has been absolutely nothing in contrast towards the agony the Eastburn household went via. Hennis will probably be put to death in a humane way. I don't think the uncertainty that Hennis should have skilled right after his 1989 acquittal after which his subsequent court-martial and as well as his death sentence equals what Kathryn Eastburn and her two daughters went via that evening. This sentence is just, but it can never be fair. Timothy Baily Hennis noticed to that.

Instincts and Traits in Dogs

Author: Janine Carter

Domestication of canines was accomplished by humans thousands of years ago. Many think that the world's first dogs were tamed wolves, as dogs share many biological traits with wolves. First of all they look very much alike and their actions are similar. They both have highly developed sense of smell and hearing.

Dogs are extremely loyal and dependent on their masters. They have a place in human society to which few other species can hold a candle. The only reward for dogs in many cases is a kind word and a pat on the head. Still, the study of wolves and dogs teaches us that many of their traits haven't changed from before they were domesticated.

* Body Language is a postural display by canines that show you their intentions. When meeting a strange person, canines display their fear by raising their hackles, meaning, the hair stands up on their backs and necks. This display comes from lack of socialization with others. Of course this behavior would look more frightening with short-haired dogs, making them look larger and making the other dog or person fear him more. Many times a dog will also pull back his lips to show his teeth to make the display even more "large".

* A dogs ears and tail positions can tell you what a dog is thinking. For example, if your dog's ears go back flat and his tail goes between his legs, it means he is being submissive to humans or other dogs. The old saying "ran off with his tail between his legs" came from this postural display of dogs. Another submissive behavior is rolling over on the back.

* If a dog kneels or puts his front legs on the ground lowering his front quarters, it generally means he wants to play. This is always accompanied by a friendly wagging tail.

* Standing tall on stiff legs and circling another dog is a posture of superiority and domination. It often includes strutting around with frequent growling and snarling.

* An instinctive ritual in canines is circling before lying down. Some specialists say that this came from a habit long ago of circling to pack down the grass to give a soft bed to sleep in. Others think the dog is smelling the area for enemies before lying down, as they put their noses to the ground while they are performing this task.

* Attacking small animals is an innate hunting instinct in dogs from the time when they had to hunt for their food.

* Digging is a trait that is thought to come from the dog's instinct to dig a den when there is nothing else appropriate to make a den with. Terriers were known to pursue their quarry through underground tunnels if necessary.

Other things to consider is the dogs sense of smell developed so they can sniff the air to find game and also to sniff out enemies that may be approaching. They have a wonderful sense of hearing for the same reasons and their sight is highly developed.

Although canines' instincts and actions are influenced by their heredity, they are highly intelligent mammals, and are the products of a combination of training, experience and genetics.

Grooming Your Goldendoodle And Other Shampooch Tips

Grooming your Goldendoodle and other sham-pooch tips

This article will hopefully help you in grooming your Goldendoodle and give you some other sham-pooch tips.  Goldendoodle  grooming and health  go hand in hand. Good grooming not only helps your Goldendoodle dog  look good, it is also important for your doodle's  physiological as well as the psychological health.  While some doodle owners take their doggies to their groomer,  many instead decide to groom their Goldendoodle dog themselves at home. If you begin grooming your Goldendoodle when he or she is very young,  they will come to enjoy bathtime and your doodle will not be difficult to groom at all.

Brushing your Goldendoodle  thoroughly every day is an important part of dog  grooming and health.  A shaggy or curly coated Goldendoodle will need to be brushed and groomed more often than the smooth coat doodle.  Because brushing and trimming isn't natural to a dog,  your doodle will need  to be trained in order to accept this kind of handling.  It is recommended by many dog groomers and doodle breeders  that bathing and trimming start at an early age.  It is best to proceed slowly at the beginning, giving your Goldendoodle lots of praises when they relax and enjoy the process.

As a breeder since 1996,  I always begin the grooming process with our doodle puppies when they are approx. 4 weeks of age.  I do recommend that a rubber mat be placed on the bottom of your tub which will help prevent your doodle from slipping and possibly getting injured.  Some puppies yelp and show fear when they are first introduced to water.  This fear will subside as your Goldendoodle is bathed more frequently, over time.  I personally use a small cat slicker brush on the coat of my Goldendoodles.  The slicker brush has many different sized bristles which will help pull out any dead hairs in the coat.  Some groomers do not recommend human shampoo.  However,  I never use shampoo which is made specifically for dogs.  There are many harsh chemicals which can cause your doodle to have not only dry skin,  but can cause skin allergies over a long period of time.  Instead,  I use non-tearing shampoo made for humans such as baby shampoo.  If you want to use shampoo with various fragrances,  the best ones are those with "apple" or "cherry" fragrances.  High quality shampoo can be purchased at hair specifica stores such as "Sally's".   I purchase my shampoo in bulk so that it lasts a very long time.  Before rinsing the coat of my Goldendoodles,  I spritz their coat with a nice detangler.  Some can be left in the coat and some have to be rinsed out.  However,  make sure to take a large, human comb and comb the detangler through the coat.  Rinse well.  You'll find your Goldendoodle's coat extremely soft to the touch after you have taken a blow dryer and dried your doodle completely.   In the summer,  you can simply hand towel your doodle's coat and then let him or her dry naturally.

If you have a grooming table,  you can trim your doodle's coat very easily.  A great place to purchase a grooming table is by ordering it online.  Revival Animal  has a nice list of grooming tables you may find for  a low price.  Some groomers use a clipper called "Groom Master", however,  I will personally tell  you that I found better success with the "A5 Turbo" clipper.  I began with the "Groom Master" clipper but found myself going through three of them before discovering that the "A5 Turbo" clipper worked entirely better and I could also find replacement blades locally instead of having to specically order blades that were only for the "Groom Master".   The "A5 Turbo" clipper has two speeds and will allow you to shave down your Goldendoodle in less than 30 minutes!  This clipper is very quick and reliable.   There are also various sized blades that will work great for this particular clipper and allows you to give your Goldendoodle various types of hair cuts.

If you decide to groom your Goldendoodle yourself,  you will want to go to your local "Sally's" store and purchase an apron which specifically helps repell hair.  It's a great investment.  Some groomers spend hundreds of dollars on scissors,  but you can find some great scissors that will last a very long time at your local department store in the "Crafts" or "Sewing" section.  A $15 pair of nice scissors will work and last just as long as the $150 pair.   Let me forwarn you that using scissors can be dangerous on your doodle if your Goldendoodle is not calm and relaxed during the grooming process.  You can easily cut your doodle or  yourself.  I can't even tell you how many times in 13 years I've cut myself or a dog, accidentally, if they turned their head quickly or jerked their foot away at the exact time as beginning to trim.  Some doodles have "ticklish" feet and will constantly jerk their feet as you try and trim around their pawpads.  Over time,  they get use to the scissors touching their feet but in the beginning,  you will need to be very careful with scissoring.

Your Goldendoodle  also has to learn to sit still or lie on his or her  side as and when needed.  Teaching your Goldendoodle to enjoy the grooming process is just a matter of time and repitition.  Other grooming tools needed are various types of brushes, combs, a wash cloth, ear cleaners and spritzer bottles.

If your shaggy or curly coat Goldendoodle's  hair is tangled, grooming can take longer and become  a bit tricky.  Proceed gently to avoid irritating your Goldendoodle's  skin.  Despite some doodle breeders' claims that Goldendoodles do not shed, your doodle will lose some hairs,  particularly during the dry winter months.  Some Goldendoodles can even have bouts of dry skin,  so care is necessary when grooming him or her.  Don't over bathe your doodle!  Unless your doodle dog is outside every single day getting into muddy situations or doing a lot of swimming at the beach or lake,  do not bathe your doodle more than twice a month.  Bathing more frequently will cause your doodle to have dry skin.  Even if you own a smooth coat Goldendoodle,  who needs relatively very little coat maintenence,  you will want to groom him or her on a regular basis simply because this process is good for your doodle's over all grooming health.

Grooming your Goldendoodle helps keep the dog's skin healthy and coat nice and shiny, not to mention,  it helps him or her smell good. Grooming your doodle dog  helps to improve the blood circulation; helps  keep  the coat free of ticks, fleas  and other less welcome visitors.   Remember to trim the hair underneath your doodle such as the inside of his or her legs and under the belly.  Close attention to your Goldendoodle's ears are especially important!  Hair can grow into the ear and that can cause yeast infections or ear infections.  Another important area for your Goldendoodle is around the eyes. Shaggy coated Goldendoodles have the most problems with their hair growing over or around the eyes.  If you do not pay careful attention to this,  hairs can curl inward and cause a corneal abrasion by touching the eye itself.  Always keep the hairs trimmed around your Goldendoodles' eyes when he or she is an adult dog.  Puppies do not require this type of trimming because their coat will change and go through 10-15 different coat phases before he or she turns 1 year of age.

Not all varieties of dogs need a bath everyday. Some short haired dogs require very little coat maintenence.  Some can make do with a bath once a month.  For smooth coat Goldendoodles,  you can simply use a washcloth to wipe the coat gently if you do not want to fully bathe him or her.  Shaggy coat and curly coat Goldendoodles have facial beards.  These beards tend to collect food particles or even dirt or grass if your doodle is outside playing.  I never recommend using shampoo around the face of your Goldendoodle.  Using a wash cloth that is damp and without soap or shampoo is best.  Some doodles require their mouths to be cleaned every day.  Coat staining can occur around the eyes or the mouth if this area isn't cleaned every day.   If you want to help your doodle not have a "tangly" coat,  spritz your doodle's coat prior to bathing with a "detangler".  Comb it thoroughly through the coat.  Then wet your doodle's coat completely and use your slicker brush to brush through the coat as you are wetting his or her coat.   This will help remove any tangles in the hair before their shamoo/bath.  Always keep soap away from your doodle's  eyes and ears and make sure to use an ear cleaner to help clean the insides of the ears.   An inexpensive ear cleaner can be made with White vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.  Use a spritzer bottle and mix an equal portion of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide together.  This not only helps clean your doodle's ears,  but helps them smell nicer too!   Never use Q-tips for cleaning the insides of your doodle's ears! Never!  Use a  washcloth or cotton balls.

Grooming your Goldendoodle also helps you bond with your loving, wonderful tempered new pet!  It should  be quite obvious why dog grooming and dog health are so closely associated.    Even if your Goldendoodles  does not need daily brushing, it is necessary to check your doodle  every day. Keeping the skin of your Goldendoodle and his or her  body parts cut free and sore free is also an important part of your doodle's  grooming and health. If you discover fleas on your Goldendoodle's coat during the grooming process,  fleas  have to be removed with a fine-toothed comb, and embedded ticks have to be removed carefully with tweezers and alcohol.   Pouring a small amount of alcohol on the tick will help loosen its grip prior to removing it from your doodle's skin with tweezers.  A new flea prevention product called "Comfortis" is on the market and we use this on our Goldendoodles as well as other dogs.  It is a once a month tablet that helps flea prevention.   Always examine your doodle's nails,  ears and teeth as part of your dog grooming routine, each and every time you groom your lovely Goldendoodle dog.

Goldendoodle and other dog  grooming and health are so closely associated also because the skin is the first indicator of the state of your pet's health. Flea allergies, contact allergies, skin rashes and irritations need to be stopped at the earliest.  Ears should be regularly checked. The insides of the ear should be a pale pink. If they show any discoloration or give out an unpleasant odor,  this could be a sign of an ear infection or mite infestation.  Have your Vet look into the matter before proceeding with medication to treat the problem.  Make sure to take your doodle to your vet for a closer examination if you see discoloration inside of his or her ears or smell an odor coming from the inside of the ear.  Your doodle's  toenails have to be clipped every two or three weeks, depending upon how much exercise your doodle gets every day.  Nails can be trimmed with human nail clippers if your doodle is a puppy.  If an adult,  the guillatine type of nail trimmers works great but you must use these type of nail clippers with extreme care.  You can actually lose a toe or your own finger if you are not care.  Have your vet show you first,  how to properly clip your Goldendoodle's toe nails before you do it yourself.  If you do not feel comfortable in nail trimming,  always have your groomer or your vet perform this procedure.  Examine your Goldendoodles' paw  pads to see that there is nothing stuck between them.  Sometimes hair grows between the pads and pebbles or small rocks or twigs can get tangled up inside of the hair that will cause your doodle pain as he or she walks.  Make sure to check your doodle's pads every day.  If hair is growing around the pads,  you will need to carefully trim the hairs with scissors.

Teeth cleaning is  important to your doodle's over all health maintenence as well. Your doodle  can develop cavities or periodontal diseases, just like humans,  too. Cleaning the dog's teeth twice a week with pet toothpaste and a small toothbrush is advisable.  There are some very good teeth cleaning products on the market.  You can also clean your Goldendoodle's teeth during his or her grooming process.

Regular grooming not only helps keep your doodle  healthy, it also offers bonding time for you and your Goldendoodle.  In the natural world, dogs lick each other and groom each other. I don't think you want to lick your Goldendoodle in order to clean him or her?  This licking by other dogs  reinforces pack behavior and subordination. But you can reinforce pack behaviour and subordination by regularly grooming your doodle with brushes and combes.  Brushing or combing your Goldendoodle's coat  for 10-20 minutes every day or as often as necessary will bring your Goldendoodle  immeasurably closer to you, immense pleasure and will also help keep your doodle  healthy.  Goldendoodles can live up to 20 years under ideal circumstances and if immaculately cared for.

Some Goldendoodles may require professional grooming to maintain their  hair and coat health  if you are not experienced in grooming your doodle,  yourself.  If you do not have the time to groom your doodle on your own or if you do not feel comfortable in grooming your Goldendoodle on your own,  then your doodle will have to be trained to stand properly and to tolerate the attention of a stranger.  Dogs  that have no hair on the skin will need special skin creams to keep the surface oily and germ free. If you own a hairless dog,  then of course you will want to also use a sun screen to help protect your dogs' skin from harmful sun rays.

Dog grooming and health are mutually dependent. Without grooming,  your dog will not be able to retain good health; Without grooming,  your dog could have a shorter life span.  In spite of all the exercise and good food you give to your canine, without proper grooming health,  your pet will have a shorter life.   In case of dogs that shed heavily, regular grooming helps you to combat floating tufts of hair and speed up the shedding process. Dog grooming is not only about dog health, it is also about bonding, trust and love.

College Football Homecoming Traditions – a Celebration of Losing

Author: Matthew Mulligan

Now that autumn leaves are blowing in through the patio door and being tracked into the dining room by the dog, our storied institutions of higher learning have begun the time honored process of educating our young people in the arts, sciences, humanities and professional fields. It is noble work. Included in the curriculum is the act of gathering half a dozen young people each fall who are willing to remove most articles of clothing and paint themselves in the school colors to lead a parade though campus. These and other alcohol induced undignified traditions have become the American Homecoming legacy.

It is surprising that none of these institutions have dedicated resources or brain power to better understand the allure of our Homecoming traditions. But maybe these things really are too simple to fully understand. The dignity that most universities present to the world is underpinned by the creation of an excuse – for a weekend anyway – for getting together with other alums to drink and reminisce about how things were better when they were students.

Homecoming is a uniquely American tradition of inviting parents and alumni to campus for a celebration highlighted by a football game. Ostensibly, these institutions say they want to connect alumni and friends with the student body. While this is fine with the alumni, the schools really want to connect alumni and friends to the Development Office.

Some alumni, though, really do want to ‘connect’ with the student body. This is where it gets interesting. Opportunities to make these connections are readily provided. Parades, rallies, dances and the ample ‘tailgate’ parties allow young and pretty college coeds to mingle freely with male alumni who weren’t quite ready to graduate and are kicking themselves for getting that thesis in on time. And that was ten years ago. Homecoming provides alums with a reason to take part in the festivities and contribute a few bucks to the school. This ensures they are invited back the following year to oogle the cheerleaders and watch the sorority parade while decked out in school sweatshirts and Rolex watches.

To keep up appearances, some Universities have attempted to make Homecoming serious. What a waste of effort! Socializing is the one thing most of us took from our college experience that we really enjoyed. The unfortunate among us then got jobs. We gaze longingly back at the days where the biggest concern was making the beer money hold out without getting a job and getting the seat next to Nikki from the dorm in Accounting 101.

Social gatherings are the staple events of Homecoming, although to keep a good face on things, some schools offer open lectures, symposia, and other things that are rolled out to prop up the illusion of a higher purpose. Then of course there is the football game.

What does a losing school do to celebrate its homecoming? It is an interesting study. Losing schools try to deflect attention from the football program, or, at least they should. Others, such as (then) 2-2 Colorado, declared its home game with #3 Oklahoma as its homecoming game. With a roll of the dice, the Buffalos hung themselves out to all their alumni as well as a sizeable television audience against mighty Oklahoma. There wasn’t any hiding from this one. If the Buffaloes went down, they were to be the laughing stock. If the Buckalo kicker could whack one through from 45 yards with no time left, the Gold and Black were in fact golden.

At last report, the Sooners were spending some time in quiet reflection wondering what hit ‘em. Some years ago, Ralphie the 2,000 pound Buffalo mascot got loose on her pregame run around the field and headed for the Oklahoma bench. Handlers got her back under control, but not before several OU players had to return to the locker room for fresh pants and socks. Even fresh uniforms couldn’t save the Sooners drive for a top BCS spot this year as the Buffs knocked ‘em off 27-24. One has to admire the schools that roll out their toughest home games for Homecoming. Most of the time, this strategy results in a humiliating train wreck.

In honor of American Homecoming traditions, here is a look at how some of the leading and losing football programs are handling Homecoming or have attempted to handle it in years past.

Iowa State – Ames, Iowa residents were treated to this year’s theme “Catch the Cyclone Craze.” Events included a scavenger hunt where participants didn’t know quite what they are looking for, being originally instructed only to find the ‘object’ and that other clues would follow. This exercise is very similar to the situation surrounding the Cyclone running game. Everyone knows the ‘object’ is the football, but still, no one can find it and some of the players have no idea what it looks like.

The Homecoming edition of the ISU Alumni mag included an article on Iowa Wineries, but after this season, it may include one about Iowa Whineries. Purchase of a $2.00 homecoming pin and a red sweatshirt worn to the “Wear Red to Get Fed” event – got the underfed students free admission to a cookout featuring all-you-can-eat pork burgers. Any game the Cyclones picked for Homecoming was going to be a touch one, so it really didn't matter who showed up.

Army – At least these guys can have a damned real parade – complete with people who know something about marching and a band that can play. And everyone considers it an honor to be in the thing. You can also be sure the cadets won’t be wheeling a keg of beer in a shopping cart behind the band. (They are much more creative about hiding it.) The Corps of Cadets scheduled in Tulane this year for what was at least an entertaining game - a 20-17 victory for Army.

Syracuse – Events included the “Orange Friendzy” offering free Dreamcicles and a seminar on crime scene investigation. The ones giving this seminar will be looking at how the Orange managed its only road win against then #18 Louisville. The Orange Homecoming date was October 14 vs. Rutgers. If the Orange team that plucked the Louisville Cardinals had shown up for this one, it would have been interesting. However, the Orange sent out the team that lost its lunch in Iowa City (a 35-0 loss to the Hawkeyes.) Homecoming day will go down as the “Orange Endzy” as this season can't end soon enough.

Utah State – The Aggie Admin types declared its 9/22 date against San Jose St. as its Homecoming Game. Something called a Paint Dance was to be held. This was either a deeply meaningful tradition or an event designed to show off young tuition-paying students soaked in non natural pigments. We will hope it is the former (or maybe not). There was also a run walk or roll event – which was interesting the morning after trying to get a drink in Utah. Most participants showed up dazed and sober. The school provided Aggie treats and a True Aggie night – although what those events actually were remains a mystery.

San Jose State – In an effort to set itself apart, San Jose State put a heavy academic focus on this year’s festivities – highlighted by a banned book discussion and debate. This might explain what happened to the playbooks. San Jose State is currently 3-5 claiming wins over Utah State, Cal Davis and the Idaho Vandals. SJ State at least had the sense to set up its homecoming game against Idaho.

North Carolina – The NoCareOlina web site only listed Homecoming events from 2006 – including something called Victory Village. It is a lonely place this year as the Blue Tar Heelers up to last week, had a whopping two victories - one over powerhouse James Madison U and a stunning upset of Miami. So the Victory Village is littered with losses to schools no one has ever heard of and one win over a school no one has ever heard of, and one over a team from football’s top tier. Go Figure.

NC State – NCStaters arranged a ‘Pack Howl’ and pep rally for this Homeconing season. One suspects that the Pack Howl was preceded by a billion sponsored tailgate parties and tents. The universal allure of the Delta Zeta tent overrides the Wolfpack’s dismal performance on the field. And this invites the question whether the over inebriated alums are set to howl at the football record or at the DZ Sorority float.

Duke – In a true harmonic convergence of alcohol related events, the 2006 celebration combined Homecoming with Oktoberfest. If the Germans can make beer and dance after drinking, Duke should hire some of ‘em to build a football program. Right now, Duke has one win under their belts – which is a significant improvement over last year. Other special events include hospital tours – presumably the one where they take the Duke players after the Florida State game.

New Mexico State – The school invested a great deal of brain power in their Homecoming. Included in the schedule was a Beans, Burritos and Beer alumni event. This was to be followed by a bonfire. At least these two events weren’t scheduled too closely together or campus would look like the Trinity site a few miles north. Reba also performes this year, but on the stage and not on the field. The Aggies looked into whether or not she had any eligibility left as they were going to throw her in at cornerback.

Notre Dame? – No listing of late for any Homecoming events. Perhaps the Irish don’t celebrate it. That would be understandable this year. Most of the campus is still in the deep depression that occurs when devoted fans face up to a solidly losing season. It is tough to celebrate when you are 0-8. Well at least the Irish haven’t sunk quite to that level this year but they can see 0-8 from where they are. If you included losses from last year, the Irish went 8 straight without a win before going to the Rose Bowl and waking up the UCLA Bruins. Even this win isn’t causing many Irish fans to want to hang out in the stadium parking lot. They’ll stay inside to drink their beer or go to Disneyland.

Idaho – You know when your team plays on the road and the host schools schedule you for their Homecoming, your team is a dog. But what does Idaho do for their own Homecoming? The Idaho Vandals boast a Homecoming theme called “Living the Legacy.” It is curious why a legacy of Vandalism is something to celebrate. Idaho managed a win over Cal Poly this year.. that is it. These on-field distasters don't pull more bucks from the alumni, so the UI folks are gonna have to do something special… like pull out a win.

Homeowners Insurance Basics

Author: Elliot Bigman

Whether we're tucked into an inland community or living on the coast, homeowners insurance can be a challenge in North Carolina and in many south eastern states. Florida is often said to be the most difficult, for its state-run Florida Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, originally to only be a "last resort", is now the state's primary provider. However, recently Florida allows certain private insurance versus government insurance).

In both FL and NC, one of the difficulties home owners and renters often face is the classification of "hard to insure" by insurance companies. In the southeastern U.S., we understand that storms, hurricanes, floods, tornados and fires create higher risk coverage conditions. Extreme weather is a strong influence upon insurance availability and price. Naturally, Florida and North Carolina insurance companies are more likely to place the "hard to insure" designation upon properties near the coasts or lakes, be they waterfront condos, single family homes or apartments. For homeowners and renters alike, "hard to insure" means higher premiums, if insurance can be found.

Other conditions can cause a person to have difficulty finding insurance coverage or make for higher insurance premiums. An entire neighborhood may be termed as unsafe if high crime is a problem. If homeowners or renters have property that is not well maintained, this also can count against them.

If a property is used as a rental, it's important that it not be seen as frequently "vacant" as it's difficult to obtain coverage for vacant properties, for they present higher risk. Sink holes can be terrific problems in Florida. While landslides in some areas of the mountains of North Carolina are a real threat, they are not covered at all by standard homeowner or rental policies.

Other reasons one might be in a high risk category are trampolines, swimming pools and ponds. "High risk" dogs can be a certain reason one may enter this hard to insure realm. Alarming reports about injury and damage caused by dogs are commonplace. While all breeds of dogs are best behaved with well trained and experienced owners, statistics indicate that some breeds have more serious difficulty without proper training, socialization, kenneling etc. Breeds that may place property owners at risk from an insurance standpoint (regardless of how prepared the owner is) are the Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Chow and the Wolf hybrid.

While there are specific elements that create "hard to insure" and high cost coverage situations, also worthy of mention is the simple "hassle factor" experienced by millions in Florida. Floridians have had much to navigate through, given the changing state rules of past months and recent years. For example, recent changes to policies that cover wind and water damage must now have minimum deductibles of $500 in Florida. In addition, when policies exclude wind damage coverage, special rating credits are required in event of any damage. It's helpful to find assistance navigating all the particulars.

As there are many details to consider, homeowners and renters are encouraged to collect multiple insurance quotes, as important differences often exist among policies.

Goldendoodle and other dog facts

When it comes to Goldendoodles, they are a dog that is now the most loved, adored and also the most misunderstood canine of all. For instance, did you know that there are 701 pure breed dogs and that the Border collie, Poodle and Golden retriever are claimed to be the smartest of dogs? I do not know why just these three breeds were listed because I am sure there are other smart breeds of dogs out there and the person behind the poll definitly didn't include the Goldendoodle! Fact 1: The Goldendoodle dog is highly intelligent.

Goldendoodle dogs also have a superior sense of hearing and smell, but of course when it comes to documented evidence, the bloodhound is so trustworthy that it is the only dog whose evidence is admissible even in court of law in the United States! There are alot of Goldendoodle as well as other dog facts are very interesting. For instance, it is claimed that the Great Dane is the tallest of all dogs, while the Chihuahua is the smallest dog of all. But are they really? As a breeder of Goldendoodles since 1999, I know for a fact that one Goldendoodle we created some years ago turned into a 150 pound "small pony" ! And while it is claimed that the Chihuahua is the smallest dog, we own a tcup sized LhasaPoo (a different type of hybrid dog) who weighs three pounds or less and I've heard of some tcup Yorkies as well as Tcup Poodles weighing even less!

Goldendoodle dogs are usually very attached to their families. Some are even heroically so. Goldendoodles can even take care of their invalid or handicapped family members on a daily basis, if properly trained. Over the years, we've had some of our past customers train their Goldendoodle dogs as therapy dogs or assist dogs. Many rescue organizations and policing organizations use Golden Retrievers as well as other types of dogs as a part of their regular team. Some Golden Retrievers are used as narcotic dogs. While it is doubtful that a Goldendoodle can be used as a guard dog, I see no reason why they could not be trained as hunters, draught animals, drug and explosive detectors, and even as a dog who seeks out weapons.

In the Middle Ages, dogs wore spiky light armors and ran into the battle grounds to attack mounted knights. The Rottweiler was one such breed used in medieval battles. The German Shepherd dog has been used in the field with every day soldiers for many centuries. There are many fun facts regarding all dog types, but the Goldendoodle dog has not been around long enough to have a lot of facts written about them. The Goldendoodle dog was first known as a "Goldendoodle" sometime around 1997. This hybrid was first created by the Australians who were looking for a low shedding, low dander assist dog for those who had allergies. Goldendoodles in Australia are used for other purposes and make wonderful family pets for children of all ages. There are only three coat types for the Goldendoodle dog.

1. Shaggy.
2. Curly.
3. Smooth.

The Goldendoodle does not have any rare colors and actually can have markings anywhere on its body, of any color. The Goldendoodle dog also can have various eye colors such as brown, blue, green or multi colors. Since beginning our Goldendoodles in 1999, we have seen some Goldendoodles born with one green eye and one blue eyes or one brown eye and one blue eye. In 2010 we hope to create Duetche Kurzharr Doodles which is a German Shorthaired Pointer mixed with a Goldendoodle. Since we do have a sire with blue eyes and our German Shorthaired Pointer has lovely amber colored eyes and multiple freckles, we hope that we will see offspring coming out with not just lovely light colored eyes, but with spots and freckles. The German Shorthaired Pointer is extremely intelligent! Our own girl, Merry-Belle, is fascinated with squeeky toys and carries them all over the house. She loves to have someone hold a ball up in the air and anxiously awaits it to be tossed in her direction so that she can jump high up in the air to catch it.

Before purchasing any type of dog, you should attempt to learn all the important facts that pertain to the breed you wish to own. Many families make the mistake and hurry up to get a dog because their children have been insisting on having one. Many parents buckle under pressure. But the problem is, people who purchase a Goldendoodle under the assumption of knowing the facts, find out that the dog isn't for them. Sure enough, after the dog arrives home and the initial excitement has quieted down, the chore of actually taking care of the dog and molding its character begins. This is when the honeymoon is over and when most families realize that their Goldendoodle is really a bundle of work, like all dogs!

Children find out that the dog can't just let itself out to use the bathroom and many will gripe about having to constantly take their new dog out for bathroom breaks. Most of the chores of caring for a Goldendoodle or any dog for that matter usually falls to the parents after a few days. A puppy is cuddly and sweet until it poops or pees on the floor or has to be supervised at all times or when it howls and howls for attention from its human family. The Goldendoodle dog has become the most popular of hybrids because other dogs with long and short hair, shed profusely. Many people who buy a Goldendoodle are told by their breeder that the dog doesn't EVER shed and that they are "hypoallergenic". Imagine the family's horror when they realize that indeed their Goldendoodle dog sheds and not only does it shed, but it needs constant, regular care! This is just one example of how some doodle breeders try and use the "non shedding", "Hypoallergenic" key words to bring in a customer. An inexperienced breeder can lead someone to buy a Goldendoodle dog for the wrong reasons. Since 1999, we as breeders have watched the Goldendoodle hybrid go through 10-15 different coat changes. We know for a fact that the Goldendoodle dog does indeed shed. BUT, they shed like no other dog we've ever seen.

The Goldendoodle will lose a strand or two of hairs and not gobs of hair or clumps of hair. Unless your Goldendoodle has a hormonal imbalance, his or her coat is not going to just completely fall out. Unlike a dog with a double coat, the Goldendoodle dog has a single coat and sheds very, very little. As the Goldendoodle dog changes from a puppy to an adult, there will be coat changes and you may see its coat do the most shedding during this "growing up" phase. When the Goldendoodle dog turns a year of age, their owners will see the least shedding.

Goldendoodle facts become very important if you really want to understand your doodle. Knowing as much about your doodle dog will also help you with training. Some dogs are quick to learn, while others need more time. Regardless of breed, dogs are individuals and training needs to be specifically geared toward the individual dog itself and not by breed type or generalization. Just as human have their own unique way of responding to learning things, dogs are the same way. They are individuals just like we humans are. Most dogs respond well to rewards and praise, while a few breeds need firm commands and rigorous discipline. Goldendoodles do not learn well with negative training. Positive reinforcement works very well for getting your Goldendoodle to comply and respond to training commands. Some dogs like the Dalmatian, need a lot of exercise and are not very suitable to small living quarters, while others like the Poodle have a lot of grooming requirements. Shaggy and curly coat Goldendoodles have a high grooming requirement. All Goldendoodles, regardless of size, would do well indoors so long as he or she is taken for daily walks. Goldendoodles enjoy being where ever their human family members are. They are happy to run beside you if you are jogging or on your bicycle and they are just as happy to sleep at your feet if you are sitting down watching television. Goldendoodle dogs are snugglers. They usually are not independant dogs. They can become lonely if left for long periods of time without human companionship. Depending upon coat type, some Goldendoodles can tend to be barkers or high drive. It has been our own experience that the shaggy coat and smooth coat Goldendoodle has the best temperaments of all three coat types. The curly coat Goldendoodle can tend to pick up some of the quirkly traits of the Poodle. Those experienced with the Golden Retriever will want to stick with either the shaggy coat or the smooth coat Goldendoodle. Those experienced with the Poodle will want to stick with the curly coat Goldendoodle.

Many people believe that certain dogs inherit certain disorders like hip dysplasia and cataract based on breed type. Many people believe that some breeds are prone to getting fat if they are not exercised regularly. Genetic ailments can happen to any type of dog regardless of their breed and all dogs can become fat and lazy if they are over-fed and are lacking in exercise. Dogs who are inbred or backbred or come from a genetic bottle neck (lacking in a wide genetic gene pool) will be at a higher risk for having genetic ailments. Age also plays a direct role with health issues in dogs. It is not known why some dogs die from health issues and others can go through their entire lives not ever having a health issue. Just as people die from various types of health issues or just simply pass away in their sleep, dogs are very similar in this way. Goldendoodles who come from a first generation breeding seem to be the hardiest of dogs. Goldendoodles can be a long lived dog under ideal circumstances just as the Poodle is the longest lived dog of all dogs.

One of the most important dog facts most overlooked by many is that every purebred has been originally created with a particular purpose in mind. While the Lhasa Apso was originally created as a palace guard dog, the Poodle was used for multiple purposes such as retrieving, swimming and just being a companion. The German Shorthaired Pointer makes a wonderful gun dog and many Rottweilers and German Shepherds or Doberman Pinschers make excellent guard dogs. Depending upon the history and lineage of your Goldendoodle, he or she may have a wonderful compilation of traits that would be suited for multiple tasks or would simply just make a wonderful house pet.

If you expect a breed of dog to completely forfeit its inherent tendencies and don a new mantle, you are asking for trouble. Never expect a Goldendoodle to guard you or your possessions and don't be surprised if your Pit Bull bristles with anger and ultimately attacks a stranger. Some traits are deeply rooted and instilled in particular breed types. With our own Goldendoodles, we do know that their lineage holds multiple companion dogs, Utility dogs, show dogs, Master Hunters as well as having a deeply rooted love for playing in the water. Training your Goldendoodle or entering them into obedience classes can help you to bring some discipline to your doodle as well as even enhance their natural tendencies. Training does not replace them.

Anyone deciding to purchase a shaggy or curly coat Goldendoodle must also need to learn basics in grooming unless you are going to have someone else groom the doodle. Being knowledgeable about the Goldendoodle will help you become a better doodle owner. Goldendoodles can participate in fun competition dog trials, even fun dog shows. Their are other important dog facts which also include a need to know such information like neutering, spaying, vaccinating and de-worming your doodle at regular intervals. You will want to have your vet place your Goldendoodle on a vaccination and deworming schedule and let your vet get to know your dog. It is also very important to know that owning a Goldendoodle as with any other type of dog can be expensive. Know before you buy, that you can afford the upkeep that your doodle will require.

In a nutshell, knowing your doodle facts will help you, the new doodle owner, to truly appreciate your Goldendoodle's uniqueness and will allow your doodle to happily spend its entire life with you.
